Celebrating Act 31: Revitalizing Menominee Ways of Being Through Language

The Wisconsin Indian Education Association invites you to its Act 31 Celebration on Thursday, August 18, at 5 PM at the Menominee Casino Resort in Keshena, WI. The Act 31 Celebration recognizes Wisconsin Act 31 and the work done in furthering Indian education in the state. Wisconsin Act 31 (American Indian Studies in Wisconsin) refers to the requirement that all public school districts and pre-service education program provide instruction on the history, culture, and tribal sovereignty of Wisconsin’s eleven federally-recognized American Indian nations and tribal communities. Each year, the Wisconsin Indian Education Association celebrates the accomplishments of individuals, schools, tribes and communities in advancing culturally relevent and historically accurate Native American programming and curriculum.

The celebration will include an opening ceremony, welcoming, awards presentation, guest speakers and of course, all of it grounded in culture and tradition.

In addition to the celebration, there will a strategic planning session and board meeting over the course of two-days.

Thursday, August 18
In conjunction with the celebration, a strategic planning session will be held from 1 to 4 PM at the College of Menominee Nation’s Cultural Learning Center earlier in the afternoon on Thursday, August 18.

Friday, August 19
On Friday, August 19, there will be a board meeting from 8:30 to 11:30 AM at the College of Menominee Nation ‘s Cultural Learning Center. The board meeting will also be accessible virtually via Zoom. The Zoom meeting link and log-in information will be available closer to the meeting date.

Any WIEA member in good standing is encouraged to attend both the strategic planning session and board meeting. Click here for the draft board meeting agenda.

The Act 31 Celebration is a free event, open to the public and all are welcomed to attend.
